PIR-DUAL

The Versa Wireless PIR-DUAL is a pet-immune wireless motion detector for professional alarm control panels. One switch sets it to 319.5 MHz or 345 MHz. So a single motion detector covers Qolsys IQ and GE/Interlogix on one setting, and Honeywell 5800-series, Resideo and 2GIG on the other. You stock one motion sensor instead of two.

A dual-element passive infrared motion sensor watches the room through a multi-zone Fresnel lens. The coverage area runs 40 ft in the direction the sensor faces, and 40 ft at 45 degrees. Pets up to 55 lb do not trip it. A sensitivity jumper picks normal or high. Normal alarms after about 3 to 5 steps. High alarms after about 2 to 4, for rooms where an intruder only crosses a short distance in view. Normal sensitivity suits most installations.

The one thing to get right on a dual-frequency detector is the order of assembly. Set the frequency switch before the battery goes in. The PIR-DUAL reads the switch at power-up, so moving it on a live sensor changes nothing: to switch bands later you take the battery out, move the switch, then put the battery back. An installer who sets the switch with the battery seated gets a sensor that will not learn in, and the frequency looks correct on the bench. It is the first item in the manual's own troubleshooting list for a zone that never reports. Mount the sensor 7.5 ft or 10 ft above the floor, and aim it so a likely intruder path crosses its view. People are detected best moving across the field of view, not straight at it.

Set the frequency before you install the battery. To change it later, take the battery out, move the switch, then put the battery back. Put the panel in learn mode, insert the battery or open and close the cover, and the panel captures the ID. The sensor is ready about a minute after power-up. For 5 minutes after the cover closes the LED lights for about 2 seconds on each detection, so you can walk-test the coverage. Full figures are in the Specifications tab, and the panel-by-panel detail is under Panels & FAQ.

Installation notes: mount the PIR-DUAL indoors on a vertical wall or in a corner, 7.5 ft or 10 ft above the floor, with a clear line of sight across the area you are protecting. Aim it away from windows, direct sunlight, heaters and heating or cooling vents, and keep glass out of its view - infrared does not pass through it. Set the frequency switch before the battery goes in. Walk-test after every install and at least once a year afterwards. Use one CR123A 3V lithium battery with correct polarity. Risk of fire, explosion and burns: do not recharge, disassemble, heat above 212 deg F (100 deg C), or incinerate. Keep batteries away from children and dispose of used cells per local regulations. This sensor is a supplemental security device. Like any sensor it can fail to detect, so test the system regularly.

Panels the PIR-DUAL works with

Set to 319.5 MHz (switch ON), the PIR-DUAL enrolls on Qolsys IQ Panel 4 and IQ Panel 2+. Those panels need the Qolsys 319.5 MHz RF module - the SRF daughter card - fitted. It also enrolls on GE/Interlogix 319.5 MHz panels. Use Auto Learn Sensor and pick an interior zone type.

Set to 345 MHz (switch OFF), it enrolls on Honeywell VISTA panels and on 2GIG GC2, GC3 and Edge. It also works on Resideo PROA7 and PROA7PLUS fitted with the PROTAKEOVER module, rotary position 0 (5800 Series). PROTAKEOVER runs alongside the panel's built-in PROSiX radio, so a takeover account keeps both.

On a VISTA-20P, enroll from the RF sniffer at Installer Code + [#] + [3]. Confirm coverage with Go/No Go at Installer Code + [#] + [4]. Exit with Installer Code + OFF.

Documentation

Start with the Versa installation manuals and datasheets. For panel-side detail, see the PIR-DUAL install guide for Qolsys and Resideo and the wireless motion detector guide. On the 345 MHz side, read the 345 MHz motion detector alternative guide. The Versa panel compatibility guide covers how the sensors work across the whole line.

PIR-DUAL questions installers ask

Is the PIR-DUAL a pet-immune motion detector, and up to what weight?

Yes. The PIR-DUAL is pet-immune up to 55 lb. Two pyroelectric elements alternate in polarity, and the engine only declares an alarm on a qualified sequence of polarity changes. That sequence improves immunity to drafts, sunlight and other nuisance sources, while motion detection still fires on a person crossing the room.

Mount it 7.5 ft or 10 ft above the floor to get the rated behaviour, and give it a clear view across the area you are protecting. Height is the part installers underrate: the lens divides the room into alternating detection zones, so mounting high enough keeps pets in the lower part of the coverage. If a pet does trip the zone, the fix in the manual is to raise the sensor rather than to drop the sensitivity.

Can one wireless motion detector work on both Qolsys and Honeywell panels?

Yes, that is what the PIR-DUAL is for. A switch sets the radio to 319.5 MHz for Qolsys and GE/Interlogix, or to 345 MHz for Honeywell 5800-series, Resideo and 2GIG. One SKU covers both ecosystems, so a mixed-panel truck carries one pet-immune motion detector instead of two.

How do I set the PIR-DUAL to 319.5 MHz or 345 MHz?

Before the battery goes in: set the frequency switch. ON is 319.5 MHz. OFF is 345 MHz.

To change it afterwards: take the battery out, move the switch, then put the battery back. The sensor reads the switch at power-up.

Then enroll: put the panel in learn mode. Insert the battery, or open and close the cover, to send a signal. Confirm the panel added the zone, then assign an interior zone type such as interior follower.

What do I need on a Qolsys IQ Panel 4 or IQ Panel 2+?

The Qolsys IQ Panel 4 and IQ Panel 2+ need the Qolsys 319.5 MHz RF module - the SRF daughter card - installed. A 319.5 MHz sensor enrolls on a 319.5-equipped panel. Set the PIR-DUAL switch to ON for 319.5 MHz and use Auto Learn Sensor.

Our guide to 319.5 MHz sensors and the SRF card walks through which panels take which card.

How do I enroll the PIR-DUAL on a Resideo PROA7 or PROA7PLUS?

Set the switch to OFF for 345 MHz. The panel needs the PROTAKEOVER module with its rotary switch on 0 (5800 Series).

In Local Programming, choose Add Sensor, pick the 5800 or takeover type, learn the serial by tripping the sensor, set Loop 1, and give it an interior-follower response. PROTAKEOVER and the panel's built-in PROSiX radio run at the same time, so both sensor families report to one panel.

What is a good Honeywell motion sensor replacement on 345 MHz?

Set the PIR-DUAL to 345 MHz and it drops in as a Honeywell motion sensor replacement. It enrolls as a standard 5800-series interior motion zone on VISTA panels, on 2GIG GC2, GC3 and Edge, and on a PROA7 with PROTAKEOVER. It is a pet immune motion sensor rated to 55 lb, and it runs 3+ years on one CR123A. A takeover keeps the same zone layout.

How far does the PIR-DUAL see, and how do I walk-test it?

The PIR-DUAL will detect motion up to 40 ft in the direction the sensor faces, and 40 ft at 45 degrees. It is fully operational about one minute after power-up.

Close the cover to start walk-test. For the next 5 minutes the LED lights about 2 seconds on each detection. Walk across the coverage, wait for the LED to go out, then wait about 12 seconds before the next pass. After 5 minutes the LED disables itself and the sensor runs normally.

One thing to expect in normal operation: a 3-minute hold-off runs between reports, so the zone will not fire again straight away after a detection. That is by design, not a fault. Walk-test the sensor at least once a year.

What battery does the PIR-DUAL use and how long does it last?

One CR123A 3V lithium battery, with 3+ years of typical life. The sensor supervises itself and sends a low-battery report to the panel, so you get warning before it goes quiet.

How is the PIR-DUAL different from the PIR-319?

The PIR-319 is a 319.5 MHz PIR motion sensor for Qolsys IQ, GE/Interlogix and Alula controllers. It is the direct fit when the account is 319.5 MHz and will stay that way.

The PIR-DUAL adds the 345 MHz side, so the same part also covers Honeywell, Resideo and 2GIG. Pick the PIR-DUAL when one truck stock has to serve mixed panels. Both are pet-immune to 55 lb and both run on one CR123A. See both in wireless motion detectors.
