PLUG-OD-ZW Z-Wave Outdoor Dual-Outlet Plug

The PLUG-OD-ZW is a Z-Wave 800 Series Long Range outdoor plug-in module with two grounded outlets in an IP65 enclosure, each outlet controlled independently, carrying 15 A total at 125 VAC, 60 Hz.

It runs on the US Z-Wave band — 908.42 / 916 MHz for classic mesh and 912 / 920 MHz for Z-Wave Long Range, with a range of up to 1300 ft direct-to-controller (LR) - 330 ft (100 m) per hop (mesh) — and joins any Z-Wave certified hub or panel with S2 security. Quick start: plug it into a covered Class A GFCI-protected weatherproof receptacle, hang it vertically with the outlets facing downward, add it to your network, then plug in your loads. Before you install — check the receptacle Read all instructions before use. Plug only into a covered Class A GFCI-protected weatherproof receptacle, and the cover must close completely over the plug and cord. The receptacle must be on a circuit with 20 A branch-circuit overcurrent protection. Do not use an extension cord. Mount the unit more than 1 ft above the ground surface. Do not install or use within 10 ft of a pool, and do not use in a bathroom. Do not exceed 15 A total between the two outlets. Do not use this plug to control medical or life-support equipment, electric heaters, or any device that could become hazardous if switched unattended. Install per the National Electrical Code (NFPA 70) and local regulations in the United States, or the Canadian Electrical Code and local regulations in Canada. Where required by code, installation must be performed by a qualified, licensed electrician. If unsure, consult an electrician. If a covered weatherproof receptacle is not provided, contact a qualified electrician for proper installation.

Choosing a location

  • A covered Class A GFCI-protected weatherproof receptacle on a 20 A protected branch circuit. Plug directly into it — no extension cord.
  • Hang the unit vertically with the outlets facing downward. That orientation is what preserves the waterproof function of the enclosure.
  • More than 1 ft above the ground surface, more than 10 ft from a pool, and not in a bathroom.
  • Leave the button on the top face of the unit reachable, and keep the Z-Wave QR code readable if you plan to enroll by SmartStart.
  • Have a Z-Wave certified controller or panel handy, plus access to its add-device screen.

Catalogs list this device class under several names — z wave outdoor plug, outdoor z wave plug, z wave outdoor outlet, outdoor smart plug, dual outlet outdoor plug. They all describe the same thing: a plug-in module in an IP65 enclosure that switches grounded outlets on and off over Z-Wave. Here, both outlets switch separately, from one node.

LED indicator

A single LED reports outlet state and network activity. Its brightness is adjustable — see parameter 7 — and what it reports on the outlets is set by parameter 1. On a plug that has never joined a network, read this table together with First power-up below.

How to install the PLUG-OD-ZW

Four steps. Add the outdoor Z-Wave plug to your network before you connect a load, per the manual's step order.

STEP 1

Check the receptacle

Confirm it is weatherproof, GFCI protected, and on a 20 A protected branch circuit. The cover has to close completely over the plug and the cord once the unit is in.

STEP 2

Plug in the unit

Hang it vertically with the outlets facing downward to preserve the waterproof function of the enclosure, more than 1 ft above the ground surface.

STEP 3

Add it to your network

Complete Z-Wave network setup below before you connect a load.

Connect your load

Plug in the devices you want to control. Stay inside 15 A total between the two outlets.

Z-Wave network setup

The PLUG-OD-ZW joins any Z-Wave certified network with S2 encrypted inclusion, and it supports SmartStart, so you can enroll it by scanning the QR code instead of pressing the button. Follow your panel's or hub's own instructions to start each operation.

ADD

Add to network (inclusion)

Put your Z-Wave controller into Add (inclusion) mode, then press the button 3 times quickly. The blue LED flashes; the green LED lights for 2 seconds when the device is added. On a first plug-in the LED begins blinking within 30 seconds on its own, ready to be added.

QR option: Z-Wave SmartStart Scan the Z-Wave QR code on the unit with a SmartStart-capable controller. The DSK code is printed on the packaging box — do not remove or damage it. Z-Wave Long Range requires SmartStart inclusion and an LR-enabled controller.
REMOVE

Remove from network (exclusion)

Put your controller into Remove (exclusion) mode, then press the button 3 times quickly. The purple LED flashes; the green LED lights for 2 seconds when the device is removed.

RESET

Factory reset

Click the button 2 times quickly, then hold for at least 10 seconds. The light flashes once when the reset succeeds. Removing the device from the hub also restores factory defaults. Use a reset only if your primary controller is missing or inoperable.

First power-up

On first power-up, before the plug has ever joined a network, both relays turn off and the blue LED turns on. If it was previously included, each outlet returns to its last state with a soft start.

Association groups

Two association groups are documented:

  • Group 1 — Lifeline (Binary Switch Report), up to 5 nodes.
  • Group 2 — left outlet, sends Basic Set, triggered by button control of the local load, up to 5 nodes.

Association is available through the gateway only, so set the groups from your hub's Z-Wave screen rather than at the plug.

Button functions

Everything the outdoor plug does locally is a press pattern on the single button on the top face of the unit — including switching each outlet on its own, with no hub in the path.

Parameter settings

Set these from your hub's Z-Wave configuration screen. Parameters 2 to 5 — the four timers — are set from your controller only. Where a tap count is shown, that tap pattern cycles the parameter through its values at the plug.

The four timers are what make a two-outlet plug worth wiring into a schedule: parameters 2 and 4 run the left outlet, parameters 3 and 5 run the right one, so holiday lighting on one outlet and path lighting on the other keep separate hours from one node. Troubleshooting

  • Will not add. Confirm the controller is in Add mode, then press the button 3 times quickly. Move the plug closer to the controller and retry.
  • Still will not add. The plug may already be paired. Run an exclusion first, then add it again.
  • Outlets did not come back after an outage. Parameter 6 sets what happens when power returns. The default, 2, restores the state from before the outage; 0 brings the outlets back off and 1 brings them back on.
Safety — risk of fire, electric shock, or burns Do not exceed 15 A total between the two outlets. Do not use an extension cord. Plug only into a covered Class A GFCI weatherproof receptacle on a 20 A protected branch circuit. Hang the unit vertically with the outlets facing downward, more than 1 ft above the ground. Do not use this plug to control medical or life-support equipment. Use extreme caution with appliances: schedules, automations, or network errors may cycle a device unintentionally, so do not include appliance-controlling devices in groups or scenes, and do not use Z-Wave to control electric heaters or any device that could become hazardous if unattended. Works with any Z-Wave certified hub

This product can be included and operated in any Z-Wave network with Z-Wave certified devices from other manufacturers. All non-battery nodes act as repeaters, regardless of vendor. Each outlet is controlled independently, and the plug presents 2 endpoints with the Multi Channel command class — which is how a hub addresses the two outlets separately: one device to enroll, two loads to automate.

Classic mesh inclusion. The PLUG-OD-ZW is a mains-powered node, so it is an always-on repeater at about 330 ft (100 m) per hop — and an outdoor plug is often the node that finally carries the mesh out to a detached garage, a gate, or a shed. Group 2 can drive up to 5 associated devices with a Basic Set from the left outlet, triggered by button control of the local load.

Z-Wave Long Range inclusion. Include it by SmartStart on an 800 Series controller with Long Range enabled and it talks straight to the controller, up to 1300 ft direct-to-controller (LR) against about 330 ft (100 m) per hop on mesh. Z-Wave developer Eric Ryherd measures Long Range at over double the range of classic Z-Wave — +14 to +20 dBm transmit power against -1 dBm — and reports that in a typical neighborhood it "easily reaches the entire yard," which is the whole argument for putting an LR node at the far corner of a property.

Yes. Each of the two grounded outlets is controlled independently. At the plug, tap the button once for the left outlet, twice for the right outlet, and hold it 3 seconds for all outlets. From a hub, the PLUG-OD-ZW presents 2 endpoints with the Multi Channel command class, which is how a controller addresses the two outlets separately. Each outlet also has its own pair of timers: parameters 2 and 4 for the left outlet, parameters 3 and 5 for the right.

Is the PLUG-OD-ZW rated for rain and cold weather?
