01Overview
What this manual covers
The PLUG-ZW is our indoor plug-in on/off module, and it adds Z-Wave control to a lamp or a small appliance. It plugs into a standard grounded 3-wire receptacle and controls a single switched outlet, either from the button on the side of the unit or from your Z-Wave controller. It's always powered, so on a classic mesh network it also repeats Z-Wave traffic and extends the reach of your network.
This page is the installation manual in web form, so you can read it on your phone right at the outlet. The warnings, ratings and regulatory lines are printed here exactly as they appear in the PDF, and the steps around them are written the way we'd talk you through the job across the counter.
Z-Wave 800 Long Range gives you two ways to join. Scan the SmartStart QR code on the device and the plug adds itself, and on an LR-enabled hub that's how it joins in Long Range mode, which is where the big number comes from: Up to 1300 ft direct-to-controller (LR) - 330 ft (100 m) per hop (mesh). Or press the button three times and it joins the classic mesh instead.
Here's what's on the device before you start. There's one switched, grounded outlet on the front, one round button on the side of the unit, and one LED that tells you the outlet state and what the radio is doing. The QR code on the device carries its DSK, so leave it in place. If you need the same thing outdoors, the PLUG-OD-ZW is the weather-resistant two-outlet version, and if the load is a lamp you'd like to dim, the LAMP-ZW2 is the plug-in dimmer.
Before you start
RISK OF FIRE / SHOCK / BURNS - read all instructions before use.
Check the load. Do not exceed 15 A general purpose or resistive, 10 A / 1250 W tungsten, or a 1/2 HP motor. Do not plug in washers, dryers, or refrigerators.
Check the receptacle. Use a grounded 3-wire receptacle and plug the unit directly into it - do not use an extension cord or power strip.
Location. Indoor, dry locations only. Keep away from heat and open flame, and leave the button on the side of the unit reachable.
Code compliance. Install per the National Electrical Code (NFPA 70) and local regulations in the US, or the Canadian Electrical Code in Canada. If unsure, consult a licensed electrician.
Worth knowing
Add the plug to your network before you connect anything to it, because then a failed add can't be confused with a load problem. And decide the pairing mode up front: on classic mesh the plug repeats for its neighbors, while on Long Range it talks to the hub alone.
02In the box
What ships with the PLUG-ZW, and what you'll need
- The PLUG-ZW module, with its switched grounded outlet on the front, the program button on the side, and the SmartStart QR code on the housing.
- The printed quick guide, which is the folded version of this manual, so the pairing steps and the safety lines travel with the device.
- No tools at all, because there's nothing to wire. You plug it in, you press a button, and you scan a code.
- A grounded 3-wire receptacle, indoors and dry, with room for the module to sit flat against the wall plate.
- A Z-Wave certified controller, with its add-a-device screen open, and if you want Long Range, an 800 Series hub with LR enabled.
03Placement
Where the PLUG-ZW can go
The PLUG-ZW is for indoor, dry locations, in a spot that stays between 32 and 104 deg F (0 to 40 deg C). It plugs straight into a grounded 3-wire receptacle, and it goes into the wall itself rather than into an extension cord or a power strip, because the plug is listed for a direct connection and nothing else.
Keep it away from heat and open flame, and pick an outlet where the button on the side stays reachable, since that button is your local on/off and your way into pairing. If you're after range, remember the plug repeats for other devices only on classic mesh, so a plug in the middle of the house does more for the network than one tucked behind a dresser.
Think about the load before the outlet. General purpose and resistive loads go to 15 A, tungsten loads to 10 A or 1250 W, and a motor to 1/2 HP. The load section below has those lines exactly as they're printed, along with the appliances it must not switch.
04Install
Plug it in, add it, then connect the load

Push the unit straight into a grounded 3-wire receptacle, then press the button once and confirm the switched outlet responds and the LED lights. If nothing happens, try a different receptacle before you go any further.

Add it
Add it to your network now, before you connect any load, using the SmartStart or button steps in the next section. That way you're testing the radio and the outlet separately, and a failed add never looks like a bad lamp.

Connect the load
Plug the lamp or appliance you want to control into the switched outlet, staying inside 15 A general purpose or resistive, 10 A or 1250 W tungsten, or a 1/2 HP motor. Then switch it from the button and from your hub, so you've proved both paths.
On a plug that has never joined a network, the outlet powers up off and the blue LED lights, which is normal. A plug that was on a network before comes back to its last state and settings instead, so an outage doesn't cost you your parameters.
05Add and set up
Add, pair, remove or reset the PLUG-ZW
You've got two ways in. SmartStart is the QR code route, and it's the only route into Long Range mode, while the button route is the classic three-press add that joins the mesh. Either way the LED tells you how it went, and your hub's own menu drives the hub side of each step.
Add it by SmartStart QR code, which is the Long Range path
- Turn Long Range on at the hub first, if you want LR mode, because Z-Wave Long Range requires SmartStart inclusion and an LR-enabled hub.
- Open your hub's SmartStart or add-by-QR screen, then scan the Z-Wave QR code on the device. The code contains the device's DSK, so don't remove or damage it.
- Plug the unit in, and it joins automatically. The LED flashes blue while it joins and lights green for 2 seconds when it's in.
Add it by button, which joins the classic mesh
- Put your Z-Wave hub into Add mode, following its own menu.
- Press the button 3 times quickly, and the LED flashes blue while it runs.
- Watch for green, because the LED lights green for 2 seconds when the device is added. A red LED means a network failure, so start the add again.
Remove it from the network
- Put your hub into Remove mode, then press the button 3 times quickly.
- Watch the LED flash purple, then green for 2 seconds, which means it's out and ready to join another hub. Removing it this way also restores the factory defaults.
Factory reset
- Click the button twice quickly, then hold it for at least 10 seconds. All custom settings are erased.
- Know when to use it, because removing the device from your hub resets it anyway. Save the button reset for a hub that's missing or inoperable.
Everything the button does
The button is on the side of the unit, and the longer press patterns step through parameters without a hub. Each press sequence advances the value one step in order, so going from 0 to 2 takes two sequences. The green LED flashes twice to confirm a parameter change, and three times for the timers.

Configuration parameters
Set these from your hub's Z-Wave configuration screen, and set the timers from the hub only, since there's no press pattern for them. The numbering skips 3 and 5, and that's normal for a Z-Wave device. Our guide to parameters and association groups explains what each one is for in practice.

Association groups and Z-Wave identifiers
Group 1 is the Lifeline, up to 5 nodes, and it sends a Binary Switch Report to the hub. It's assigned to the primary controller automatically at inclusion, so you rarely touch it. Group 2 sends a Basic Set that follows the switched outlet's on/off status, up to 5 nodes, so the plug can drive other devices directly. That path only runs on classic mesh, because on Long Range the plug's only neighbor is the hub.
The plug can be included and operated in any Z-Wave network with Z-Wave certified devices from other manufacturers, and all non-battery nodes in the network act as repeaters, regardless of vendor. The device class, the command classes and the device IDs your hub may ask for are in the specifications below.
06LEDs
What the LED is telling you
One LED, and parameter 7 sets its brightness (default Low) while parameter 1 sets whether it follows the outlet.

07Load and safety
Ratings and loads
The PLUG-ZW switches the outlet rather than varying its level, so the only load question you've got is the limit for the kind of load on it. The ratings below are the ones it's listed for, and they use the same load classes as the label on the back of the plug. A lamp with an incandescent bulb sits in the tungsten class at 10 A or 1250 W, a plain resistive load gets the full 15 A, and a small motor is fine up to 1/2 HP.

09Troubleshooting
When something doesn't go to plan
The usual calls we get, and what to do about each one.

How do I install the PLUG-ZW Z-Wave smart plug?
Plug it into a grounded 3-wire receptacle and press the side button once, so you can confirm the outlet switches and the LED responds. If nothing happens, try another receptacle. Then add it to your Z-Wave network before you connect anything to it, and plug in the lamp or appliance last.

What can I plug into the PLUG-ZW?
A lamp or a small appliance inside its ratings: 15 A general purpose or resistive, 10 A or 1250 W tungsten, and a 1/2 HP motor, at 125 VAC, 60 Hz. It's an on/off module, so it switches the outlet rather than varying its level.
Washers, dryers, refrigerators and motors over 1/2 HP stay off it, and so do electric heaters, medical or life-support equipment, and anything that could become hazardous if it switched while nobody was there. The caution block above has that line word for word.
Does the PLUG-ZW work with Z-Wave Long Range?
Yes. It's a Z-Wave 800 Series device, and on Long Range it talks straight to the hub, with reach of: Up to 1300 ft direct-to-controller (LR) - 330 ft (100 m) per hop (mesh). Long Range requires SmartStart inclusion and an LR-enabled hub, so you enable LR on the hub first and then scan the QR code on the device.
The button three-press always joins the classic mesh, so if you want LR, the QR code is the only way in.
Does the PLUG-ZW extend my Z-Wave network?
On a classic mesh network, yes. The plug is always powered, so it acts as a repeater, and every plug you add strengthens the mesh for the devices around it at 330 ft (100 m) per hop. All non-battery nodes repeat, regardless of vendor.
A plug added by Long Range talks only to the hub instead, so it repeats for nobody. That's the trade: mesh when you want the plug to help the network or drive another device on its own, and Long Range when distance to the hub is the problem.
How do I factory reset the PLUG-ZW Z-Wave plug?
Click the button twice quickly, then hold it for at least 10 seconds, and every custom setting is erased. Removing the device from your hub also resets it, so the button reset is for a hub that's missing or inoperable.
If the hub still works, remove the plug normally instead by putting the hub into Remove mode and pressing the button 3 times quickly.
What happens to the PLUG-ZW after a power failure?
By default it returns to the state it was in before the power went out, because parameter 6 ships set to 2. From your hub, set it to 0 so the outlet always comes back off, or to 1 so it always comes back on.
At the plug, pressing the button 10 times quickly advances parameter 6 one step in order rather than picking a value, so from the default it takes one sequence to reach 0 and two to reach 1. A plug that has never joined a network powers up with the outlet off and the blue LED lit.
Can I set the PLUG-ZW timers without a hub?
The two timers, parameter 2 for auto turn-off and parameter 4 for auto turn-on, are set from your hub, in minutes from 1 to 65535, and 0 disables them. The button patterns cover the LED mode, the LED brightness and the power-failure state, so the timers are the one thing you'll do from the app.
Which Versa plug goes outdoors?
The PLUG-OD-ZW is the outdoor two-outlet version on the same Z-Wave 800 Long Range radio. The PLUG-ZW is the indoor one, listed for dry locations, and it's the right pick for a lamp or a small appliance inside the house.
Which hubs and panels work with the PLUG-ZW?
Any Z-Wave certified controller, and we officially list 2GIG EDGE, Qolsys IQ, SmartThings, Hubitat and Home Assistant with a Z-Wave 800 controller. For Long Range you turn LR on at the hub and pair by SmartStart, and on a hub without Long Range it simply joins the classic mesh.
