PLUG-ZW Z-Wave Indoor On/Off Plug

The PLUG-ZW is a Z-Wave 800 Series Long Range plug-in on/off module that turns any grounded wall receptacle into one switched, Z-Wave controlled outlet for a lamp or a small appliance.

It runs on the US Z-Wave band — 908.42 / 916 MHz for classic mesh and 912 / 920 MHz for Z-Wave Long Range, with a range of up to 1300 ft direct-to-controller (LR) - 330 ft (100 m) per hop (mesh) — and joins any Z-Wave certified hub or panel with S2 security. Quick start: plug it into a grounded 3-wire receptacle, press the side button once to confirm the outlet switches, add it to your network, then plug in the load. This Z-Wave plug carries 15 A general purpose or resistive, 10 A / 1250 W tungsten, and a 1/2 HP motor at 125 VAC, 60 Hz, for indoor, dry locations.

Before you install — check the load Do not exceed 15 A. Do not plug in washers, dryers, refrigerators, or motors over 1/2 HP. Do not use to control electric heaters or any appliance that could become hazardous if switched unattended. Install per the National Electrical Code (NFPA 70) and local regulations in the US, or the Canadian Electrical Code in Canada. If unsure, consult a qualified, licensed electrician.

Where to use it

  • Plug directly into a grounded 3-wire receptacle. Do not use an extension cord or power strip.
  • Indoor, dry locations only. Keep away from heat and open flame.
  • Leave the button on the side of the unit reachable.
  • Have a Z-Wave certified controller or panel handy, plus access to its add-device screen.

Catalogs list this device class under several names — Z-Wave plug in switch, Z-Wave plug in module, Z-Wave appliance plug, Z-Wave outlet plug. They all describe the same thing: a plug-in module that switches one grounded outlet on and off over Z-Wave.

LED indicator

A single LED on the front of the Z-Wave plug reports outlet state and network activity. Its brightness is adjustable — see parameter 7. On a plug that has never joined a network, read this table together with First power-up below.

How to install the PLUG-ZW

This PLUG-ZW installation manual covers the whole job in three steps. Add the Z-Wave plug-in module to your network before you connect a load, so you are testing the radio and the outlet separately.

STEP 1

Plug the unit in and test the outlet

Plug the unit into a grounded 3-wire receptacle. Press the button once — the outlet should switch and the LED should respond. If nothing happens, try another receptacle.

STEP 2

Add it to your network

Complete Z-Wave network setup below before you connect a load. Adding the Z-Wave outlet plug while it is unloaded keeps a failed inclusion from being confused with a load problem.

STEP 3

Plug in the load

Connect the lamp or appliance you want to control to the switched outlet. Stay inside 15 A general purpose or resistive, 10 A / 1250 W tungsten, or a 1/2 HP motor.

Z-Wave network setup

The PLUG-ZW joins any Z-Wave certified network with S2 encrypted inclusion, and it supports SmartStart, so scanning the QR code is usually faster than pressing the button. Follow your panel's or hub's own instructions to start each operation.

ADD

Add to network (inclusion)

Start inclusion on your Z-Wave hub, then press the button 3 times quickly. The LED flashes blue, then lights green for 2 seconds when the device is added.

Faster option: Z-Wave SmartStart Scan the Z-Wave QR code on the device with a SmartStart hub. The QR code contains the device's DSK — do not remove or damage it. Z-Wave Long Range requires SmartStart inclusion and an LR-enabled hub.
REMOVE

Remove from network (exclusion)

Start exclusion on your hub, then press the button 3 times quickly. The LED flashes purple, then lights green for 2 seconds when the device is removed.

RESET

Factory reset

Click the button twice quickly, then hold it for at least 10 seconds. Removing the device from your hub also restores factory defaults. Use a reset only if your primary controller is missing or inoperable — all custom settings are erased.

First power-up

If the plug has never been on a Z-Wave network, the outlet powers up off and the blue LED lights. If it was on a network before, it returns to its last state and settings.

Association groups

  • Group 1 — Lifeline (Binary Switch Report). Most controllers assign this to the primary controller automatically during inclusion.
  • Group 2 — Basic Set, which follows the switched outlet, so the PLUG-ZW can drive associated devices directly. Up to 5 nodes per group.

Button functions

Everything the plug does locally is a press pattern on the single button on the side of the unit.

Parameter settings

Set these from your hub's Z-Wave configuration screen. Where a press count is shown, each press sequence advances the value one step in order, so 0 to 2 takes two sequences. The green LED flashes twice to confirm a change, three times for the timers. Set the timers from your hub.

Works with any Z-Wave certified hub

This product can be included and operated in any Z-Wave network with Z-Wave certified devices from other manufacturers. All non-battery nodes in the network act as repeaters, regardless of vendor, to increase network reliability. Group 1 carries Lifeline, which most controllers configure automatically during inclusion. How the Z-Wave appliance plug behaves on the network depends on which way you include it.

Classic mesh inclusion. The PLUG-ZW is a mains-powered node, so it is an always-on repeater: every plug you add strengthens the mesh for the mains-powered devices around it, at about 330 ft (100 m) per hop. Group 2 can drive up to 5 associated devices straight from the outlet's on/off state, with no hub in the path.

Z-Wave Long Range inclusion. Include it by SmartStart on an 800 Series controller with Long Range enabled and it talks straight to the controller, up to 1300 ft direct-to-controller (LR) against about 330 ft (100 m) per hop on mesh. Z-Wave developer Eric Ryherd measures Long Range at over double the range of classic Z-Wave, on the strength of a +14 to +20 dBm transmit power against -1 dBm. An LR node has one neighbor, the primary controller, so repeating and direct device-to-device association belong to mesh inclusion. That is the trade to weigh: choose mesh inclusion when you want this plug to extend the network or drive another device on its own, and Long Range when distance to the controller is the constraint.

What happens to the PLUG-ZW after a power failure?

By default it returns to the state it was in before the power failure, because parameter 6 ships set to 2. From your hub, set parameter 6 to 0 so the outlet always comes back off, or to 1 so it always comes back on. At the plug, pressing the button 10 times quickly advances parameter 6 one step in order rather than selecting a value, so from the factory default it takes one press sequence to reach 0 and two to reach 1. A plug that has never joined a Z-Wave network powers up with the outlet off and the blue LED lit.
